After a decade, The Philippine Cosplay Scene is Stronger and Better than Ever. And everyone had witnessed it on Cosplay Mania X!
SMX CONVENTION CENTER, Pasay City — As we have reported earlier, the first day of Cosplay Mania X last October 02, 2010 was a huge success and there were thousands in attendance from what ZEN Otaku Honbu has observed. The attendance numbers in the second (2nd) day of the event has nearly doubled compared to that in the first.
The excitement did not die down from start to finish, because the second day was jampacked. Even the second floor hallway of SMX Convention Center was full of cosplayers, photographers, and people who are awaiting for the programme to start. As we have reported earlier, during the earlier parts of the day, Jin Joson and the international cosplayer Jesuke has done some Cosplay Workshop for the Roleplay aspect and wig-styling respectively. Also, ANIMAX Ani-Mate Stephanie Henares (http://www.animaxasia.com/animates) was there and has done a couple of shots to be aired on the channel.
At the same time, competitors for the Cosplay Building Competition was working hard to work on those impromptu costumes they are making. It was a hard work for all the teams participated, and maybe even worst for “Team WTF?” because they have to defend their titles since they are the last year’s winners.
Then they had announced the winners for the Lights! Camera! Cosplay! competiton, sponsored by ANIMAX, showcasing talents in both Cosplay and Videography. Ani-Mate Stephanie had said on our interview that, “They were really good!” Regarding the videos that had been submitted, she also said that, “It wasn’t that amateurish at all.”
After that, the Six winners of the Cosplay Tournament of Champions (ToRCh) from Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, and Manila, has finally met for the grand finale. The ToRCh presentation has really put some emphasis on the “Costumes” that they are wearing and the “Roleplay” that they are doing in the stage. They have upgraded their costumes for the big finale and gave a big act that everyone will not forget. The ToRCh finale was judged by prominent cosplayers, Jin Joson and Paul Mendoza, and together with international guests, such as Clive Lee and Jesuke. We have talked to Team Davao, “3/4”, and they said that they are glad that Cosplay.ph has went to Davao to showcase Anime and Cosplay from a Davaoeno’s perspective.
There were also some bands that played throughout the evening, those they have enjoyed the Super Mario Bros. sound effects a little too much… Kidding. COINS! Also, We also impressed that CMX people has made two different stages for main functions and for the bands. One is the efficient use of space, and since they are using a big function hall like SMX Convention Center, it will look bad if they will just fit everything in a small corner. Another one is it ot time consuming, because everyone do not need to wait for all the bands to set-up all their equipment they a few more minutes to test the equipments. I hope we can see this happening again in future events.
And at the later parts of the event, they have started to give away the prizes, two of which are PSP (Major Prize) and PS3 (Elite Prize). Oh how we all wish to win any of those prize, but this guy (picture above) has won the PS3… Lucky Bastard.
And when all the booth sponsors are starting to pack-up, and people are slowly going home, Cosplay.ph has played a short documentary on the Decade of Philippine Cosplay, which includes some of the old Cosplay archives from 10 years ago and interviews from veteran cosplayers. And lastly, every single cosplayers who are in the event had posed for the camera, cheered because they have gone a long way, and believe that they can go much further.

We have interviewed some of the key people who are a part of this successful event, and asked them on their views, and what will be the future of Cosplay Mania and Philippine Cosplay in general.
Here is the Host of X-Life (Qtv Channel 11) & Animax’s “Ani-Mates”, Stephanie Henares talking about Cosplay Mania X, What she could say about the participants of the Lights! Camera! Cosplay! competition, and Her opinions on the popularity of ANIMAX and Japanese Anime in the Philippines.
Here is the Winner of the Davao Leg of the ToRCh competiton. We asked them on what do they feel that Cosplay.PH has visited their hometown, and they also told us that they were shocked that they have won the Davao Leg, even though they were unprepared. [some parts of the audio recording may be inaudible.]
We had talked as well with the very enthusiastic head of Cosplay.ph and one of the emcees of the event, Mr. Pablo Bairan. He spoke about the success of Cosplay Mania X, and also the Cosplay Tournament of Champions, and what will be the future of the Philippine Cosplay scene.
We had also been given a chance to talk to the renowned international cosplayer, Jesuke. We asked her about her views on the Philippine Cosplay scene, and differentiate it to the cosplay scene on her hometown (Singapore) and the countries that she has visited.
That was an exciting night, and definitely something that is worth celebrating for, and something that all Pinoy cosplayers will never forget. As Kuya Pabs had said, “This is not the end, this is just beginning.” And we really hope that a bigger and brighter Cosplay Scene in the Philippines for decades to come.
