Explains Animax’s strategy for Haruhi Premiere.
10 APRIL 2011, Mandaluyong City — Popular pop culture blogger Mike Abundo explained Saturday about the recent stunt that involved Cosplayer Alodia Gosiengfiao regarding her supposed “retirement” in the cosplay scene.
A video message from Gosiengfiao was released March 28 on her Facebook page, saying that she will retire from cosplaying to supposedly “go to school full time” because she loves the school life.
“I’ve been thinking about this for quite some time now, and now I have made the final decision, It was really hard for me to decide but I’ve decided to quite cosplay… Because I want to go back to school full time…” Gosiengfiao said.
Fans were dismayed and also surprised to hear about the news, and many blogs have come up with some speculations as to what those messages meant.
Some blogs pointed out that she may do a sentai remake alongside Zanjoe Marudo and Vhong Navarro, thus the speculation that she may go to acting school.
Others also pointed out that she may go to graduate school. Gosiengfiao has a degree from the Ateneo de Manila University.
But all the speculations came to a halt on April fool’s Day, as it was revealed that it was all indeed an April fool’s joke and it was a ploy to promote Animax’s airing of the Second Season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which started airing April 6.
Speaking to ZEN during the sidelines of Ozine Fest 2011, Abundo explained his reaction when he heard about Alodia’s purported retirement.
He figured out that it was an April fool’s joke in coordination with Animax, “She was going to be a full time student but a fictional one, it’s from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” Abundo said.
He said that he liked the joke because of the snagging clues that were left for the fans to ponder upon.
“I know a few people who got the schoolgirl, if you just pay attention, she wanted school life, she wanted clubs, she wanted festivals, all those three things were featured on [The Melancholy of] Haruhi Suzumiya” he said.
He explained that the whole blogosphere and the fans went crazy over the announcement because it was connected to an arc in the series that drove fans crazy as well.
“There is a segment in the series that is called ‘Endless Eight’, which drove Haruhi Fans completely insane, so what Animax is trying to do here was replicate the effect Haruhi had on her fans like to what Alodia did to drive on her fans” he explained.
“And when the fans see the Endless Eight, when they see Haruhi affects people, they’re gonna associate that.” Abundo added.
He also reacted on some assertions that the joke was a bad marketing ploy for Animax to promote the anime.
“I would agree it was a bad marketing ploy if it wasn’t effective.” He reiterated.
He was about to called up Animax General Manager Gregory Ho to explain his side, but when Abundo saw the “Clues”, he quickly got it.
“School Life, Festivals, Driving Fans insane, oh my god, it is really on topic” Abundo said.
When asked about the reactions of the mainstream press about Alodia’s purported retirement, Abundo just said that these publications do not see the context of the message because, in his opinion, they are not “Otaku Publications”.
He also made some comments about the possiblity of Gosiengfiao acting for film or TV (she is the niece of the late 80’s Regal Films Director Joey Gosiengfiao)
“Well, you’ll have to ask her about that, but cosplay is actually about character portrayal..If Alodia wants to do acting, I’d support that” he said.
