Blames dwindling sale reason for non-renewal.
Funimation Entertainment has decided not to renew the licensing rights for the anime series Higurashi no Naku Koro ni and Zero no Tsukaima, ANN reported on Saturday.
Funimation cited on their official forums that low sales of both franchises had made their decision not to renew the two anime series.
The American entertainment company has stated that they will not chase the licensing rights for their respective sequels and anything “that bears even a minor resemblance.”
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, also known as When They Cry, is an anime series based on a Japanese murder mystery sound novel produced by 07th Expansion. The anime series first premiered in Japan on April to September 2006, and was acquired by Funimation in 2008 after Geneon Entertainment has ceased in-house production of its licenses a year earlier.
Funimation has not acquired the sequel Higurashi no Naku Koroni Kai and the OVA series Higurashi no Naku Koroni Rei.
Zero no Tsukaima, also known as The Familiar of Zero, is an anime series based on Nobaru Yamaguchi’s light novel series, and has three (3) seasons. The first season premiered in Japan from July to September 2006, and the remaining two seasons followed in 2007 and 2008. The Philippine Anime channel HEROtv has aired all three (3) seasons of the series from February to April 2011.
Last Year, Funimation has also decided not to acquire the sequel of the sports anime Big Wind-Up! (Ookiku Furikabutte) also for the same reason.
In a related story, Funimation Entertainment has announced during A-kon anime convention in Dallas on Saturday that they have acquired the anime series Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai, also known as We, Without Wings – Under the Innocent Sky.

The anime is based on an adult visual novel by NAVEL, the original creators of Shuffle! and Soul Link. The series has premiered in Japan on April 03, 2011, and is available worldwide through internet streaming on Crunchyroll.
The entertainment company also announced that they have licensed the live-action Zebraman 2: Attack On Zebra City and City Under Seige films.
