Warner Bros. Finally Okays Long-Delayed Anime Movie Remake.
After being stuck for almost 4 years in Development Hell, Warner Bros. has finally given its green light on the production for the Live-action movie adaptation of the popular series Akira.
This was reported by the Hollywood trade bible Variety, quoting several sources.
Production is expected to start within late February or March of 2012, to be megged by Spanish director Jaume Collet-Serra with a reported production budget of US$ 90 Million, US$ 10 Million down from its original price.
Variety also reports that now that the production has been greenlit, The studio will now start finding for the two male leads, Garrett Hedlund, best known as the lead star of TRON: Legacy is considered to be the frontrunner.
Leonardo Di Caprio’s Appian Way productions, Jennifer Davison Killoran and Mad Chance’s Andrew Lazar will be co-producing the film, alongside the 1988 anime movie’s original writer and director, Katsuhiro Otomo, who will be executive producing.
The plot will be set in a place called “New Manhattan”, and it “follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experiments.”, added the trade publication.
The TimeWarner-owned film company has acquired the movie rights in 2008 from publisher Kodansha for a reputed 7-figure payment, the studio also considers the movie as a tentpole project.
A tentpole project is a film project that the studio will expect to be supported financially and commercially.
The film has been in development hell since 2008. Irish director Ruairi Robinson and Albert Hughes were first choices to direct the film, Hughes begged off from directing the movie remake due to creative differences.
Last January 1st, ZEN Otaku Honbu has been rebranded as Anime Pilipinas.
