But most of Rappler’s readers “Amused,” “Don’t Care”
Alodia, as interviewed by social news network Rappler, said that she felt the need to organize an event “for fellow enthusiasts who have the same hobbies.” She also wanted to spend her 24th birthday to share her passions – cosplay, photography and gaming – with her fans.
The event hosted by Bekimon and Mistervader kicked off at three in the afternoon with performances by the band Segatron, even playing their original composition dedicated to the popular cosplayer. Alodia’s sister Ashley also graced the event together with her band The Bestidas. Young actress Kiray Celis was also expected to appear in the event, but was later confirmed to be absent for reasons unspecified by the organizers.
Thirty-one cosplayers eagerly participated in the event’s cosplay competition, including well-known cosplayers such as the “Pinoy Superman” Herbert Chavez and Lizelle Azionge, known for cosplaying as Neytiri of movie Avatar.
The birthday celebrant surprised everyone as she arrived in a red gown, inspired by a popular video game. Simultaneously, hundreds of cosplayers gathered around the venue, taking the opportunity to show their craft as mall-goers had fun taking photos with them. Cosplayers dressed as various characters such as Shrek, Sarah Kerigan – Infected from Starcraft, and Bahamut from Final Fantasy stood out among the crowd. A lucky cosplayer named Nico Fresh was pulled by Alodia to the stage to join in her cosplay act, to the enjoyment of the audience.
Games and raffles were also held during the event, with prizes ranging from gift certificates to a Canon camera raffled to participating cosplayers. But what became the most-awaited event was the Mineski DOTA Tournament later that night, which became a battleground for players to show their skills and strategy in the popular video game.
As the event drew to a close, admirers of the internationally-renowned cosplayer took turns, with their cellphones and DSLRs, to have their photos taken with her. However, some overly-excited fans started a commotion in the line, almost causing a stampede. Security personnel became annoyed with the rowdy audience, in effect making the queue for Alodia’s photo-op/autograph session more complicated.
Online perception to the event was mixed. Twitter users seem pleased with the event, while others have no idea that Alodia’s birthday is taking place. As of press time, 52% of Rappler readers “don’t care” about the event, while 37% of them were “amused.”
