Manga featuring high school students Azusa, Ui and Jun set to continue.
The June issue of the Houbunsha magazine Manga Time Kirara, on sale today, reveals that its edition of the the popular manga series K-ON! will come to an end on the next issue, which will be on sale June 09.
This ends the series’ second incarnation after the original manga ends last September.
But it also states that the K-ON! manga seen on Manga Time Kirara Carat, featuring the characters Azusa Nakano, Ui Hirasawa, and Jun Suzuki, will continue.
Although the author did not cite any specific reason for discontinuing the series, its readers have pointed out some of the criticism they have of the series.
Among other things, they criticise the complexity that its storyline has taken on since its second incarnation, the excess number of new characters introduced, and how the story was handled in general.
K-ON! is a popular four-panel comic strip written and illustrated by kakifly, and was first serialized on Manga Time Kirara on May 2007.
The manga was given a 13-episode anime adaptation in April 2009, and became a huge hit worldwide, which was followed by another anime adaptation in April 2010 with 26 episodes. Both seasons, including its OVAs, was aired on Anime channel ANIMAX.
The manga ended last September, almost the same time when the second season ended, but was relaunched as two separate manga series with one focusing on the original cast’s college days and the other continuing on the high school’s Light Music Club.
