North Metro team scores 1.67 percent from runner up, sets to defend PH Crown at AFA 2012.
“What Team is it? It’s Adventure Team!”
That was the overall yell of the audience when “Adventure Team” was crowned as the overall champion of the Cosplay Tournament of Champions (ToRCh) 2012 at the second day of Cosplay Mania 2012 at the SMX Convention Center
“Adventure Team” of North Metro Manila won over the runner-up, “Team March Harue” of Southern Luzon by a margin of only 1.67 percent. Adventure Team won on a score of 85.67 percent.
International judges KANAME☆, Reika and Anime Festival Asia Associate Producer Songwen Ouyang liked their performance and compared it with watching a movie.
“When I go back to Japan, I will buy the game (Soul Calibur)…” KANAME☆, through his interpreter, told the jampacked audience at the Hall 5.
One of the supporters of “Adventure Team”, Noted cosplayer Jin Joson, couldn’t hide her happiness upon hearing that the team will be the one who will book a flight to Singapore to defend the country’s crown at the Asian Regional Cosplay Championships at Anime Festival Asia (AFA) 2012 to be held in Singapore.
“I know how passionate these guys are, about what they are doing, and how they channeled their love for martial arts and action movies to this and I am really glad that they will be representing (our country)” Ms. Joson told ZEN Otaku Honbu.
She says that they were really passionate about their craft that they rehearsed their performance until four in the morning.
“It’s great that they were appreciated for the hard work”, she added.
Marko Villaluz, one of the members of “Adventure Team”, told ZEN Otaku Honbu that luckily, no one got injured after they did the stunts.
Asked about what could be the team’s secret in making the audience glued to them, Mr. Villaluz says that there’s no secret, they were just “having fun, the fun never ends.”
Mr. Villaluz also says that they are planning to tweak their performance when they compete for the Regional Cosplay tilt.
“Definitely, we are training hard… We will try harder to [perfect] the skit” Mr. Villaluz said.
Ms. Joson says that they have a really good chance to defend the title because of the martial arts elements of the skit, aside from the costumes
“It is not something that anyone can do; they have been doing this since they were kids. It will be kinda hard for the other teams to catch that level of performance, so I think they have a great chance of winning” Ms. Joson adds.
Eight teams competed
On overall, eight teams performed on the ToRCh finals representing Northern Mindanao (Cagayan De Oro City, Misamis Oriental), Western Visayas (Iloilo), Central Visayas (Consolacion, Cebu), Southern Mindanao (Davao), Southern Luzon (Bacoor, Cavite), CAR/Northern Luzon (Baguio City, Benguet), Central Metro (Manila) and North Metro (North EDSA) areas.
The comments of the judges ranged from simple questions about their costumes to the strangest questions like the one question Kaname asked to “Team Banana Yogurt” of Central Metro if the members, both boys, are a couple, to the loud cheers of the audience (the team answered no).
Most of the performances were based from the Soul Calibur video game series, while some of the team’s performances were also taken from other anime and gaming titles as well like Saint Seiya.
Last January 1st, ZEN Otaku Honbu has been rebranded as Anime Pilipinas.
New Name, but still has the same goal in going deeper into the Japanese Anime
& Pop-culture in the country and elsewhere in the world, from a Filipino standpoint.
