AnimeJapan 2014 to be held from March 22 to 23 at the Tokyo Big Sight.
Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) and Anime Contents Expo (ACE), the once-rival anime events in Japan, are merging to form a new event called AnimeJapan.
The new event will be held from March 22 to 23, 2014 at the East Halls 1-6 of Tokyo Big Sight. In its official website, AnimeJapan says that it “aims for [the] expansion and advancement of Japanese animation industry and related industries” and will “combine the elements of business market and festival for fans.”
Due to this merger, both TAF and ACE events for next year are cancelled.
AnimeJapan is organized by the AnimeJapan Executive Committee together with the Association of Japanese Animations (AJA) and 11 manga publishers. The Committee is composed of the following companies:
Notably absent from this list is the Tokyo Metropolitan Government which was part of the TAF organizing committee.
The Tokyo International Anime Fair was Japan’s de facto official anime event since its inception in 2002. Anime Contents Expo was formed in 2011 by various anime and manga production companies that have boycotted the Tokyo Anime Fair to protest the amendments made to the Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance Regarding the Healthy Development of Youths.
The said companies saw the amendments as a form of censorship, and even the AJA which organized the Tokyo Anime Fair called its provisions “vague and ambiguous.” Both TAF 2011 and ACE 2011 were cancelled due to the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, but resumed the following year.
